Growing instructions
Start indoors early, 12 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds about 1 inch apart. Onions are very susceptible to damping off, so do not over water and keep the good air flow where you are growing your seedlings. Once onions are 3 inches high and about 1/4 inch thick, they can be brought outdoors to harden off. After hardening off, transplant seedlings at 4 inch spacing, or in groups of 3 at 12 inch spacing. Onions require rich, loamy, weed free soil and plenty of water. Weed onion patch often. Pulling large weeds can dislodge onions. Once the tops have started to yellow and flopped over, pull onions and let cure for 1-2 weeks in a warm, dark place. Cut the tops off and store in a cold, dry, dark place until use.

I'm a small home gardener trying to figure out onions and I'm off to a great start with HVS Clear Dawn! My seed room is my breezeway, and it's a little on the cool side. I was watching to see if this would hinder germination. The Clear Dawns were the first to sprout at 7 days and I now have 100% germination! I'm so excited! HVS Rosa Di Milano are also approaching 100% germination. I'm waiting on 3 other varieties, NOT from Hudson Valley seed, and they are lagging. I have found the right variety and supplier for my region 5B! Thank you HVS!!!

Clear Dawn are delicious onions, and hold quite a long time in storage. I had great germination rates

I’m in zone 7B I planted these onion seeds on January 18. Today is March 9 as soon as the weather warms up a little bit maybe another week or two they’ll be ready to plant outside I hope for a good harvest this year.

I love these onions and have been growing them for years, but the last two years these clear Dawn and early NY have been having poor germination rates. I’m doing everything the same as in the past, but only about 50% sprout.

Hi David, Thanks for the review! We would be happy to send you a replacement pack or refund you for the seeds if you are not satisfied.

    Happy growing!

I grew Clear Dawn this year for the first time, and I love it! Germination rate was okay, no complaints. The onions are some of the best I've ever grown. I always have some onions that have fat necks that do not close tight when cured and don't store well, but not with these. It is almost January, and they are storing beautifully in an unheated basement in NW CT. I am placing my 2023 order today.

This is my first year growing Clear Dawn onions. The germination rate wasn't as high as I'd hoped it would be. This seedling tray was planted with 2 packets of seeds. That's roughly 200 seeds. I've had much higher germination rates with other varieties of onions. With that said, the seedlings themselves are growing well and will soon start hardening off to be planted outside.
