The variety is of Ukrainian origin, but was selected by Russian space engineer turned avid gardener Mikhailovich Maslov. He thought it one of the best of his garden and named it after his comrade Vladislav Volkov, a Russian astronaut who perished while returning from the first visit to the Earth's first space station. The story of this tomato has been around since the 1940s. It was relayed to me by Polly at Four Winds Farm in Gardiner, NY. Her version goes something like this:

Charlie owned a radiator repair business that he had purposefully opened at the foot of a mountain where trucks climbing the steep grade would often overheat. In his spare time, with no plant breeding experience, Radiator Charlie created a huge tomato by cross-breeding 4 of the largest-fruited tomatoes he could find. Using a baby's ear syringe and his ingenuity, he cross-pollinated plants. Each year he selected the best seedlings from the previous year's cross. Every year he continued his cross-pollinating and selection scheme saving seeds to replant the next spring. Eventually Charlie was satisfied he had created the largest, tastiest tomato he could. He sold plants for $1.00 each and claims that tomato sales paid off the $6,000 mortgage on his house in 6 years. The story goes that each spring, gardeners drove as far as 200 miles to buy Charlie's seedling tomatoes. Of course, the story has had it's embellishments over time, as has the variety.

The annual organic seedling sale at Four Winds Farm draws its own crowd from far and wide.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0072/0909/1117/products/img_8411_fdbcaff9-f105-449d-9466-90b204a58c0c.jpg?v=1587322353
paul-robeson-tomato-seedlings
Paul Robeson Tomato Seedlings

There’s a lot worthy of honor in the story of Paul Robeson, a famous opera singer, linguist, and equal rights champion who nearly had his career destroyed for standing up to the infamous McCarthy committee in the 1950's. He was idolized and well respected in Russia for his musical genius, his political activism, his athletic accomplishments, and his civil rights leadership, and this tomato has quite a loyal following as well!
