Mikado Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
Certified Organic
Grown on Our Farm
Rare American heirloom with exceptional flavor and reliability.
The first commercially available potato leaf tomato released in 1886, Mikado was once known as Turner's Hybrid. After Turner shared the seeds, it was renamed after a once popular and now controversial opera. It then took a back seat to its own progeny; the now famous Brandywine that started the heirloom tomato craze in contemporary times was bred from Mikado. Just as the Kitsune Fox's many tails signal its wisdom, the many tales of Mikado hint at its valuable place in the pantheon of garden tomato history.
Yields 6" diameter fruit weighing as much as 1½-2 lbs. Best for slicing or county fair competitions! Indeterminate.

Came across this tomato by chance, planted seeds and all grew. Beautiful light green potato leaf that grows high (plan ahead for staking) the tomatoes are big, hard to describe the color- raspberry? More pinkish I think. Great tomato taste although less tangy w high yields make this my go to from now on!
Bought seeds in 2022 because of the artwork. Started seed on May 2, transplanted May 31 to a breezy, sunny spot. Photo is July 7th, right before pruning & staking. Planted these 3 too closely; but the sea breeze will keep the air flowing. Pacific NW 8b, two miles from the beach.
The Mikado tomato has been voted our #1 family favorite….delicious taste, perfect for enjoying fresh and delightful in homemade tomato soups and sauces! It tops our list of “must plants” every year! Thank you for offering these seeds.
These are my favorite! They’re easy to grow (absolutely need to be staked). They are delicious in a sandwich and I also use them in my sauce along with Roma tomatoes- very meaty and sweet! This will be my third year growing then from seed ( I start them inside with a grow light).
Hreatbproduct and amzing customer service. Will be back for more seeds!
I grew these in 2025. My plants grew up to 9 feet tall on a trellis structure. Produced heavily and endured the heat. Fantastic tomato plant.
I’ve been growing this tomato for the past 4 years and it never fails to disappoint. It does well here in NH, great producer in amount AND size with minimal blemishes/cracks (even when we get tons of rain). It’s also super delicious! Always one I look forward to when it comes to tomato sandwiches. This will always be a staple in my garden; I can’t believe this isn’t talked about more! Everyone should give this tomato a try!
I grew this a few years ago and I was blown away by its flavor. It’s now my all time favorite tomato! Summer would not be the same with out my Mikado tomato.
